Anne Fowler Bilingual School
Iris Carranza, a young Honduran teacher, had a dream. A dream that she would one day provide an affordable, private certified bilingual school in her north coast town of La Union. That dream was realized in September 2012 when the doors of the Anne Fowler Bilingual School (named after long time friend and mentor, Canadian Anne Fowler) opened to 12 eager preschool and kindergarten students! Current classes include K-Grade 6. In September another year will start all our students will have an enriched curriculum including computer and music studies, Home Economics and Shop Classes plus use of a fully equipped library.
The public school system in Honduras is of a mediocre quality largely due to the country’s poor economic situation. Schools lack supplies, qualified teachers and suffer frequent disruptive strikes which occur due to teaching staff salaries being paid late or not at all! Parents motivated to send their children to a good school understand that a well rounded, uninterrupted education will open future doors of opportunity. However, many in this community earn less than $165 USD per month working in the pineapple fields. Although our tuition is 50% less than fees in the neighbouring city of La Ceiba, choosing to send their child to AFBS presents a major challenge for many of our student’s families. A co-op tuition plan has been developed for enrolled students who are maintaining an 80% grade average and who consistently demonstrate their adherence to the AFBS code of conduct. Parents eligible to participate in this program will be responsible for a portion of the tuition fee and a “sponsor” will pay the rest.
